How to Read Football Standings Like a Pro

A league table looks simple — rank, team, points — but the tie-break rules behind it decide titles, European places and relegation battles every season.

Points first

Win a match, take three points. Draw, take one each. Lose, take none. Points decide the bulk of the order, but they rarely tell the whole story once the season tightens up.

Goal difference breaks ties

When two teams are level on points, most leagues rank them by goal difference — total goals scored minus goals conceded across the season. A team that wins 4-0 helps its goal difference far more than a team that scrapes a 1-0.

Head-to-head and goals scored

Some competitions — the Champions League group stage among them — use head-to-head results between the tied teams before falling back to overall goal difference. Others go straight to total goals scored. Always check the specific competition's rules; they're not universal.
